The Simplix data center has moved to its new building. Most of the move went well; some things, however, did not go as well as we would have liked.
Our technical staff scheduled the move of the data center for Saturday evening. This would have the least impact on client's schedules. Furthermore, we reasoned, if anything did go wrong, the delay would limit availability on Sunday, when the system tends to see very little activity. At 5 p.m. on Saturday, we started to shut down the computers.
The next several hours witnessed a flurry of activity as computers and telecommunications equipment were loading into a waiting truck and secured against vibration. Once the truck arrived at the new data center, our technical staff moved the equipment into the new server room and began the process of recabling. A little before 11 p.m., all of the essential hardware was wired in and we were ready to go on line.
Everything at the new data center was ready. Our computers and communications gear was wired together and ready to go. Our communications gear had extablished a connection to our new Internet "backbone" provider. All we needed was for the backbone to start broadcasting our Internet traffic and tell the world how to connect to the simplix.com network.
But there were configuration problems.
After almost 40 hours of "this should be working; why isn't it working?" and a little coarse language, all of the connectors that needed to be lined up in the right order were aligned. All of the communications parameters were agreed upon.
Twelve hours after what we thought was our worst-case scenario, Simplix was back on-line. The data is once again flowing and we're beginning to return to our usual routines.
Hopefully, your routines have not been disrupted too much. We apologize for the disruption and any inconvenience that may have resulted.
